Get to Know the Author
Adam Nyang is a Gambian author whose literary work sits at the rich intersection of identity, place, and the human experience. Born and raised in The Gambia, her writing draws deeply from the landscapes, voices, and stories of West Africa, weaving together the personal and the universal with remarkable clarity and grace.
Her debut novel, Still Waters, established her as a distinctive new voice in contemporary African literature. A story of love, silence, and the quiet strength found in stillness. Her second novel, Betting on Love, published under her pen name Kani Sey by Love Africa Press, further cemented her reputation as a storyteller of rare emotional depth.
"I write because the stories I needed to read didn't exist yet so I had to create them myself."
In 2022, Adam was selected for a prestigious literary residency in Ghana, where she deepened her craft alongside some of Africa's most celebrated writers. The experience profoundly shaped her approach to storytelling, grounding her work in the oral traditions and visual languages of the continent.
She was subsequently chosen as one of just 18 writers for the U.S.-based Changemakers Cohort. A highly competitive programme recognising emerging literary voices committed to social impact through storytelling. As part of the cohort, she was awarded a scholarship to support the development of her next novel.
Adam's work has appeared in a number of literary journals and publications across Africa and beyond. Her essays and blog posts explore the themes closest to her heart. Travel, Art, Literature, and the complicated beauty of living between worlds.
She holds international academic experience and continues to write, travel, and advocate for the expansion of African literary voices on the global stage. She is currently based in The Gambia and is at work on her next book.
